Baker 4th and 5th Grade classes traveled to the Field Museum to explore the Native Truths exhibit. Before departing, students investigated how the exhibit is a much-needed contrast to the older Ancient Americas Hall that lived in the Field Museum for many years. This refreshed exhibit is now co-curated by indigenous people themselves and follows the recent Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
This field trip is a wonderful example of utilizing the vast resources we have in our surrounding community to take learning beyond the classroom and extend our inquiry based curriculum to another level. While at the museum, our students worked purposefully, in small groups, on a scavenger hunt through the exhibit creating an exciting opportunity to collaboratively learn from the rich stories, art, and artifacts of several First Nations. 4th and 5th graders were also fortunate to have hands-on learning opportunities in the Pawnee Earth Lodge.
