2nd Grade Science Inquiry
Jane Rothschild, Primary Teacher
How can we, as citizen scientists, advocate for nature?
Children chose to produce a large quantity of yard signs to help people understand the importance of leaving landscapes “messy” so that insects and other pollinators could survive the winter. The project helped us examine how choices humans make about their relationship (e.g. having tidy yards) to their environment impact other species.
Teacher reflection:
Students were very engaged in this project and collaborated to create the message and the design of the signs. The sale of the signs (to family and friends) to raise funds for the Amazon Rainforest, which they had learned was in danger of deforestation, was a source of great excitement and pride, as well.
