Baker Students Make Their Mark
Ben Ballmer, sixth grade, was one of the playwrights for the Mudlark Children's Theater 2011 show. They adapted his story, "Joe the Monkey," which he wrote in his fifth grade writer's workshop, for the stage.
Zinnia Schwartz, Premier Poet
In fifth grade, Zinnia Schwartz was awarded second place in the Jo-Anne Hirshfield Memorial Poetry Awards, sponsored by the Evanston Public Library. The competition, which has four age groups with three place winners in each category, received 847 entries. Zinnia received her award for "Windows" at a reception on May 1, 2011.
This year, as a sixth grader, Zinnia had a poem published in the November/December issue of Stone Soup Magazine, a periodical featuring the work (poems, prose, book reviews and illustrations) of 8 to 13 year-olds. Like a "real" author, she was paid for her submission.
Fifth Grade Flag Football Team Honored
The Fifth Grade Flag Football Team received the Darrell W. Judon Sportsmanship Award following their final game of the season. The award, determined by league officials and referees, recognizes the team that demonstrates the greatest level of sportsmanship throughout the season. When asked to identify the team captain during the presentation, Patrick Dunafin, P.E. teacher and Head Coach, responded, "They all are." The award was established in 1993, and Baker has been honored previously in 1997 and 2007.
Seth Steinberg Tells a Tale
Seth Steinberg, sixth grade, performed in the fourth annual KidSKALD storytelling competition presented by WNEP Theater at the Chicago Cultural Center last spring. He was one of 12 storytellers, ages 8–16, invited to participate and represented Baker Demonstration School and our longstanding tradition of storytelling.
Natalie Nedvetsky Recognized by CSO
Last year, Natalie Nedvetsky (’11) was recognized as a Citizen Musician by CSO for her musical contributions to the community. She is the youngest person to receive this honor. Natalie, along with three other young musicians, was invited to participate in a forum with Yo Yo Ma at the Chicago High School for the Arts. The event was a part of the CSO's Chicago Youth in Music Festival. Yo Yo Ma and other forum participants discussed the role of musicians as citizens in their local and global communities.
